Questions To Ask Before Joining A Racehorse Syndicate: A Checklist
The Short Answer
The BHA's Syndicates Code lists 18 things every syndicate contract must contain, from how long it lasts to what happens if the horse retires. We've turned them into plain questions to ask before you pay, and counted how many of the 102 active listings in our directory already answer each one on their website or published terms. The answers that matter most, such as early exit, retirement plans and insurance, are the ones least often published, so ask for the contract.

The Checklist
Ask each question, and get the answer in writing. The middle column is what the BHA requires the contract to cover; the counts show how many active listings answer it publicly, going by their own sites and published terms (checked 19 Oct 2026).

Requirements paraphrased from paragraph 4 of the Syndicates Code (BHA Rules of Racing, 15 October 2026 edition, version 2026.4.1, read 21 Oct 2026). The one item not in the table is 4.2: a clause saying members are subject to the Rules of Racing's chapters on Integrity and on BHA Investigations and Disciplinary Action. Counts look for the answer in the published terms we hold for each listing, such as a stated term, a share percentage or a mention of insurance, so they show what's easy to find, not what's in the contract. "Contract only" means it isn't something syndicates usually publish.
Also Worth Asking
The Code covers the contract. These are the other things people tell us they want to know, and how often they're published:
| Also worth asking | Active listings that publish it | More |
|---|---|---|
| Are owners' badges guaranteed, by share size or balloted? | 53 (52.0%) | Badge policies |
| What exactly does the fee include? | 58 (56.9%) | What fees cover |
| Can I see a full first-year cost? | 24 (23.5%) | How we cost it |
| Does the syndicate say it's BHA licensed? | 15 (14.7%) | Syndicate rules |
| Is it on the RSA members list? | 100 (98.0%) | RSA list ↗ |
Before You Sign
- Get the contract first. The Code says you sign a written contract before you join, and that every member's contract must be substantially the same. Ask for a copy to read at home.
- Know your payment duty. You must pay any amount due under the contract within 3 months of being asked. If not, the syndicator can report you to the BHA, and you could end up on its Forfeit List (Syndicates Code, paragraphs 5 to 8).
- Check who you're dealing with. A paid syndicator, or one that invites the public to join, must be licensed by the BHA. Our guide to syndicate rules explains what that means.
- Read the exit terms twice. How long you're committed for, what happens on a sale, an injury or a retirement, and whether you can leave early: see syndicate contracts.
- Add up a full year. Upfront price plus 12 months of fees, plus VAT if it's extra: see how much a share costs and what fees cover.
Racing clubs have their own, shorter code with 11 required items, including a clause that members don't own the horses. See racing club rules and syndicate vs racing club.
Every syndicate profile shows the answers it publishes, with sources, so you can see what's missing before you ask. To narrow things down first, use the Matchmaker or put up to four side by side.
Questions People Ask
Do I have to sign a contract to join a racehorse syndicate?
Yes, if the syndicator is paid or the syndicate invites the public to join. The BHA's Syndicates Code says the syndicator and each member must sign a written contract before the member joins, and every member's contract must be substantially the same (Syndicates Code, paragraphs 1 to 3).
What happens if I don't pay my syndicate fees?
Under the Syndicates Code you must pay within 3 months of being asked. After that the syndicator can send the BHA a non-payment report, and a member who can't give a good explanation may be added to the BHA's Forfeit List (Syndicates Code, paragraphs 5 to 8).
