How Much Does A Racehorse Share Cost?
The Short Answer
Anything from about £145 to £8,950 + VAT for the first year, going by the 23 syndicates and clubs whose published prices let us work out a full year. The middle figure (median) is £1,020. Cheap usually means a racing club or a small lease share; the top end is a bigger slice of an expensive horse.
What You Actually Pay
Most syndicates charge in two parts:
- An upfront price for your share of the horse (or a year's membership). Of the 39 active listings that publish one, 9 have an option with no upfront cost at all, usually a lease share or a club. The rest start from £40 to £8,950 for their cheapest share, with a median of £1,198.
- A monthly (or yearly) fee towards training, vets, farriers, transport and race entries. Where it's published (26 listings), the cheapest monthly fee runs from £27 to £329, with a median of £75.
Looking at either number on its own can mislead: a £0 lease share at £170 a month costs more over a year than a £200 club membership. That's why we add them up.

Why Prices Vary So Much
- Share size. A 1% share costs a fraction of a 10% one. Some syndicates sell 1% or 2.5% slices; others start at 5% or 10%.
- Lease or buy. With a lease share you pay no purchase price, but you don't own any of the horse, so there's nothing back if it's sold. See syndicate vs racing club.
- The horse itself. Quantum Leap Racing spells this out for one of its horses: it budgets a £65,000 purchase price, plus sales fees, vets, transport, insurance and (in most cases) £41,000 of training fees for Year 1, which comes to £5,719 for a 5% share (source).
- VAT. Some prices include it and some don't: Highclere Racing quotes its 2027 shares + VAT, for example. Always ask.
- How long it covers. Some prices cover a fixed period (to the end of a season, or a horse's two-year-old year) rather than 12 months, which is why we can't cost every syndicate.
How We Calculate The First-Year Cost
- We take one specific share or membership, the cheapest one whose upfront and ongoing prices are published together, and add the upfront price + 12 months of the monthly fee (or 52 weeks of a weekly fee, or the stated price for a year if that's how it's sold).
- Where a syndicate offers "monthly, or pay for the year up front", we show the cheaper way to pay and give the other figure too.
- We only add other fees when the syndicate clearly states them as compulsory. Vet bills, travel, race-day spending and optional extras aren't included unless the syndicate says its fee covers them, so check what's included on each profile.
- Where something's missing or unclear, we don't guess. 23 active listings publish some prices but not enough for a full year: they show "Ask syndicate", with the reason on their profile. 54 don't publish prices at all and show a dash.
- Figures are as published on the date we checked (19 Oct 2026), from each syndicate's own site, its RSA listing, its In The Paddock listing or a named press article. They're estimates, not quotes.
