Gifting A Racehorse Share: What You Actually Get

A racehorse share isn't a horse with a bow on. What you're giving is a place in a group that owns (or leases) a horse, or a membership of a racing club. Here's what that usually means:

  • A voucher lets them choose. They pick the horse themselves, so you don't have to guess whether they prefer Flat or Jumps.
  • A gift share or membership is set up in their name. You choose the horse or club, and the syndicate sends a welcome or gift pack. What's in it varies: a certificate, photos, fact sheets or a video book.
  • It isn't always ownership. A lease share or club membership gives someone a horse to follow without owning part of it. Our guide to leasing vs buying a racehorse explains the difference.
  • Costs may carry on. A one-payment membership covers the period you've paid for. A share with a monthly fee keeps costing money, so agree who pays it.
  • Owners' badges aren't automatic. Check whether the recipient gets one before you promise a day at the races.

Gift wording, prices and validity are as each syndicate publishes them on its own site, read on 23 Oct 2026 (links under "Gift Page"). "Est. First Year" comes from our first-year cost estimates for the cheapest share we can cost and isn't the price of the gift itself; "Ask syndicate" means the published prices don't add up to a clear year. Prices in euros are shown exactly as published, never converted, and left out of sorting, the budget bands and the calculator. Gift options and prices change, so confirm with the syndicate before you pay. None of the 13 states a last-order date for Christmas on the page we read, so ask when you'd need to order for it to arrive in time.

Gifts Under £100, £250 And £500

Where a gift has a published sterling price, here is what fits each budget. Each band includes the cheaper ones. Only published prices are used; a figure with a share's monthly fees on top will cost more than the first payment.

Before You Buy A Gift

Five quick checks so the present is a pleasure rather than a puzzle:

  1. Check the start date. Does the membership or share start when you pay, or on a date you choose? Some let you pick one, such as Christmas Day, so updates don't land before the big reveal.
  2. Check who's named as owner. Ask whose name goes on the agreement, the certificate and the racing registration, yours or the recipient's.
  3. Check whether they must register or complete forms. Some owners need to sign an agreement or send ID details before the share starts. Ask what the recipient has to do, so the gift isn't a chore.
  4. Check refunds and cooling-off. Ask what happens if they don't want it, or if you change your mind. Find out if there's a refund or cooling-off period and whether a voucher expires.
  5. Share a copy of the terms. Send the recipient the syndicate's terms with the gift, so they know the cost, what's included, how long it lasts and what happens at the end.

Not On The List? Ask About A Gift

A syndicate that isn't above may still help. We only list the ones that say so on their own site, and we couldn't find a gift option on the pages we read for the other 81. That doesn't mean they'd say no. Send them a short message; here's one you can copy.

You could say: Hi, I'd like to buy a racehorse share (or a membership) as a Christmas present for someone. Could you tell me: (1) do you do gift shares or vouchers, and what do they cost? (2) can I choose the start date, and is there a last date to order for Christmas? (3) whose name goes on the agreement, and does the recipient need to complete any forms? (4) is there a refund or cooling-off period? (5) can you send me the terms so I can pass a copy on? Thanks!
