Syndicate Contract And Exit Terms Compared
How long are you signed up for, can you leave early, and what happens to the horse at the end? We read the websites of 89 UK racehorse syndicates and racing clubs on 24 Oct 2026. 14 publish their full terms or agreement online, 52 publish at least some contract or exit terms, and on 37 we found none. Here is what each one says, in its own words, with a link to the page.

What The BHA Says A Contract Must Cover
Every BHA-registered syndicate must give you a written agreement before you join. Paragraph 4 of the BHA's Syndicates Code lists what it must cover. Racing clubs come under the separate Racing Club Code, but the same questions apply. Here are the points about the term and leaving, with how many of the 89 sites publish each one online.
| Para | The Agreement Must Set Out | Published Online | Question To Ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.3 | “the duration of the Syndicate” | 27 of 89 | How long is the term: a fixed date, the horse's racing career, or rolling? |
| 4.4 | “how and when the Syndicate comes to an end” | 44 of 89 | How and when does it end, and who decides? |
| 4.5 | “the intended plans for any horse(s) should they be retired while owned by the Syndicate” | 40 of 89 | What happens to the horse when it retires, and who pays until it's rehomed? |
| 4.6 | “if applicable, how members may leave the Syndicate before it comes to an end” | 20 of 89 | Can I leave early? How much notice, and what happens to fees I've already paid? |
| 4.8 | “the proportionate interest in the Syndicate of each member and any rights each member has to sell, lease, transfer or assign their share” | 13 of 89 | Can I sell or transfer my share, to whom, and does the manager have to approve it? |
| 4.11 | “details of any remuneration paid to the Syndicator and any third parties, including how it is calculated and the method(s) of payment” | 19 of 89 | What does the manager earn: a management fee, a cut of prize money, or commission on a sale? |
| 4.17 | “the Syndicate decision making processes relating to the management, training, and time and method of sale of the horse(s)” | 12 of 89 | What vote is needed to sell the horse, and when? |
BHA Syndicates Code paragraph 4, quoted from the BHA Rules, read 24 Oct 2026. "Published online" counts the sites where we found anything on that point, however brief.

Read from each syndicate's own website on 24 Oct 2026: the home page and up to 17 linked FAQ, terms, agreement and how-it-works pages (and PDFs). Website terms of use, privacy policies and shop terms are left out. "Not published online" means we didn't find it on those pages, not that the syndicate has no such term. Terms differ from horse to horse and change, and the signed agreement is what counts. Spotted a mistake? Tell us.
Common Patterns
- Most fixed terms run a season or a year, or the horse's racing career. Clubs usually sell a 12-month membership you can renew. Syndicates that buy young Flat horses often sell them at the end of their three-year-old season, as Highclere Racing and Run Away Racing say they do.
- A sale vote is usually more than half of the owners. Published thresholds include a simple majority (HP Racing – Henry Ponsonby, Royal Arch Racing), 55% (Owners Group), 65% (Amazing Racing Syndicates, Middleham Park Racing) and 75% (Chris Honour Racing, Mills Racing).
- Leaving early usually means giving notice or finding a buyer. Stated notice periods range from 30 days (OLBG Racing Syndicates) to 90 days (Stuart Edmunds Racing Club) or three months (Dare 2 Dream Racing, URSA Major Racing). Some say you keep paying during the notice period.
- Club memberships often can't be passed on. Chris Honour Racing, Dare 2 Dream Racing, Hot To Trot Racing and OLBG Racing Syndicates say theirs aren't transferable. Where shares can be sold, the manager's approval or an offer to the other owners first is common (Mills Racing, HP Racing – Henry Ponsonby).
- Fees and commission take different forms. Some take a share of prize money (5% at Let's Be Lucky Racing and Middleham Park Racing; 10% at BG Racing Syndicates and Newmarket Racing Club). Others take commission on a sale (Geegeez Syndicates, Owners Group) or a share of any gain over the purchase price (Highclere Racing, Opulence Thoroughbreds). Some charge a fixed management fee (Racehorse-Ownership.com (HW Racing)), and Amazing Racing Syndicates says it takes no prize-money commission.
Questions To Ask Before You Sign
- Can I see the full agreement before I pay? (The BHA says you must have it in writing before you join.)
- How long am I committed for, and does it renew automatically?
- How much notice do I need to give to leave, and do I keep paying during it?
- If I leave or the horse is sold early, do I get any of my fees back?
- Can I sell my share, and do you or the other owners have first refusal?
- What vote sells the horse, and who sets the price?
- What do you earn: a management fee, a cut of prize money, or commission on a sale?
- What happens to the horse when it retires, and does that cost me anything?
Our checklist of questions to ask before joining has more, and the guide to syndicate contracts explains each point.
Ireland
Irish syndicates register with Horse Racing Ireland, not the BHA, so they aren't in the table or the counts above. Here is what 5 of them say about retirement and the end of a syndicate, as published. Any prices stay in euros and aren't compared.
| Syndicate | What Its Own Site Says |
|---|---|
| Syndicates.Racing | States a 100% rehoming record and that it finds second careers for all its horses; it focuses on fillies, partly for their potential value as broodmares. source ↗ |
| Shamrock Thoroughbreds | At the end of their career with it, horses go to the Horses-in-Training sales at Tattersalls and Goffs; horses retiring altogether are rehomed through Retraining of Racehorses contacts. At the end of the 12-month contract shareholders vote by percentage held: at least 80% must agree to extend, otherwise the horse goes to the first available public auction without reserve. Private offers also need 80%, and sale money is your percentage less standard commissions. source ↗ |
| Royal Racing Club | Horses are normally sold at public auction when the syndicate ends; the manager then prepares wind-up accounts, reviewed by accountants, and the balance (after costs, including winding-up expenses) is shared by shares held. If 51% of owners vote to keep a horse for another season, instalments of €300 per month continue; if not, owners who want to can be offered a way to buy the horses together, otherwise they go to public auction. Its terms page is headed 2021, so check the current version. source ↗ |
| MRC International | Fixed-term: about 20 yearlings race through their two- and three-year-old seasons and are sold at the end of the project, with net proceeds returned by percentage. Examples it gives include Jakajaro, sold for €245,000 at the Tattersalls October Horses in Training Sale. source ↗ |
| Pimlico Racing | At the end of the syndicate term the horse is sold and members get their share of prize money and sale money. source ↗ |
