Syndicate Contracts: How Long They Last, Leaving Early And What Happens To The Horse
The Short Answer
Most syndicates run for a fixed term, often 12 months or two years in the terms we've seen. At the end the horse is sold, retired, or the syndicate renews. By BHA rules, the contract must say how long it lasts, how it ends, what happens if the horse retires and how you can leave early, if you can. Only 31 of 102 active listings publish any of that, so ask to see the contract.

What The Contract Has To Say
Under the BHA's Syndicates Code (BHA Rules of Racing, 15 October 2026 edition, version 2026.4.1, read 21 Oct 2026), every syndicate contract must include:
- the duration of the syndicate, and how and when it comes to an end (paragraphs 4.3 and 4.4);
- the intended plans for any horse retired while the syndicate owns it (4.5);
- if you can leave early, how (4.6), and any rights you have to sell, lease, transfer or assign your share (4.8);
- whether each horse is owned by the syndicate or leased (4.7);
- the insurance details for each horse, including whether members are beneficiaries (4.15); and
- how decisions are made about the horse's management, training, and the time and method of its sale (4.17).

How Long Syndicates Last
Of the 31 listings that publish their terms, 18 state a term. Some examples:
- Middleham Park Racing: Minimum 12 months (Flat) / 24 months (NH), then one month's notice.
- Mills Racing: 12–24 month terms; leave on 3 months' notice (upfront horse cost relinquished).
- RaceShare / Santorini Thoroughbreds: Monthly commitment 12–24 months set at launch.
- On The Gallops Racing Club: 10-month term (1 Jul 2026 – 30 Apr 2027).
- Owners Group: One-off payment for the full syndicate period; no further commitment.
- Highclere Racing: Most Flat horses sold by end of 3yo career.
Clubs usually run year to year: Elite Racing Club: Fixed 6- or 12-month membership with no commitment to renew; new members can cancel within 14 days. Alan King Racing Club: 12-month membership, renewable on 31 July 2027.
Leaving Early
6 listings publish how and when you can leave. Read these carefully, because leaving often means giving something up:
- Mills Racing: 12–24 month terms; leave on 3 months' notice (upfront horse cost relinquished).
- Stuart Edmunds Racing Club: Leave with 90 days' written notice; leavers forfeit prize-money payments.
- BG Racing Syndicates: Fixed (normally annual) term; owners of bought horses can leave at term end with share sold at market rates; rebate if costs undershoot.
- Oakman Racing Club: No prize money or surpluses to early leavers except at management's discretion.
- Elite Racing Club: Fixed 6- or 12-month membership with no commitment to renew; new members can cancel within 14 days.
Leaving doesn't cancel what you already owe. Under the Syndicates Code, members must pay any amount due under the contract within 3 months of being asked, and the BHA can add a member who doesn't pay, without a good explanation, to its Forfeit List (paragraphs 5 to 8).
When The Horse Is Sold
With a share in a horse the syndicate owns, a sale at the end of the term is how you get money back. Expect commission to come off first. From published terms:
- Hambleton Racing: On sale: sales-house commission plus 5% to the trainer and Hambleton.
- Geegeez Syndicates: Only 'admin cost' is 7.5% commission on the sale price of the horse at end of syndicate term.
- Run Away Racing: Horses entered for public auction at end of 3yo campaign.
- Opulence Thoroughbreds: Flat horses typically sold end of 3yo season.
- Royal Arch Racing: End of each season owners vote (majority) to continue, change trainer or sell.
- HP Racing – Henry Ponsonby: If majority wish to retire, horse goes to the sales or is sold privately.
Under the BHA's Trainer Code, a trainer responsible for a horse offered at public auction must inform and consult the owner (paragraph 11.2). For a syndicate, the owner is the syndicate, through its syndicator. With a lease share or club membership there's normally nothing to sell, so nothing comes back.
If The Horse Is Injured
- The trainer must promptly tell the owner if a horse is injured and likely to need a long period of box rest (Trainer Code, paragraph 7.2). Ask the syndicate how and when it will pass that on to members.
- Ask whether fees keep running while the horse is off, or after it retires. Amazing Racing Syndicates: Horses usually sold at Horses-in-Training sales after consulting owners; monthly payments continue until a retired horse is rehomed.
- Leases can have their own terms. Kim Bailey Racing: Two-season lease to 30 Apr 2028 with option to extend; leased horse can be returned early if injured.
- Ask about insurance: the contract must give the insurance details and say whether members benefit, but only 2 active listings mention insurance publicly. Vet bills are covered in what fees cover.
When The Horse Retires
The contract must set out the intended plans for a horse that retires while the syndicate owns it. Some published examples:
- Chase The Dream: 1-year contract (ITP); some horses sold, many retired to good homes – syndicate decides.
- HP Racing – Henry Ponsonby: If majority wish to retire, horse goes to the sales or is sold privately.
- Amazing Racing Syndicates: Horses usually sold at Horses-in-Training sales after consulting owners; monthly payments continue until a retired horse is rehomed.
Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) helps retired racehorses find new homes and offers retraining and rehoming support. Ask your syndicate who's responsible for the horse after its racing career, and whether you pay anything until it's rehomed.
Lease Shares And Renewals
Under the BHA's Rules of Racing, the lessee must register a lease with the BHA, and a lease is only valid for up to 12 months (Rules (C)14 and (C)15). If a lease syndicate's arrangement runs longer, ask how it's renewed and whether the price can change. Some syndicates offer renewals: Hot To Trot Racing: Fixed term; members get priority to renew. OLBG Racing Syndicates: Defined term; renewal offered at lower price if horse stays in training. Old Gold Racing: Renewal at end of term at a lower fee.

Questions People Ask
Can I leave a racehorse syndicate early?
It depends on the contract. The BHA's Syndicates Code says the contract must explain how members can leave early, if they can, and any right to sell or transfer a share. Of the 31 active listings that publish exit terms, 6 say how and when you can leave, often on notice and sometimes giving up prize money or the money you paid towards the horse.
What happens to a syndicate horse when it retires?
The contract must set out the intended plans for a horse that retires while the syndicate owns it (Syndicates Code, paragraph 4.5). Some horses are sold on, and many are rehomed. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) offers retraining and rehoming support for former racehorses.
